About

Built for people banks forgot.

Somewhere between the person who's never held a bank card and the person who has three, there's a much bigger group: people who move money constantly and are tired of paying for the privilege. A queue to deposit cash. A fee to send it. Another fee to take it back out. Paperwork that assumes you have a fixed address, a payslip, a document with your name spelled the way the system expects it. For a lot of people, that's not a minor inconvenience. It's the whole reason they stay outside the system entirely.

Bamba Wallet started from a simple question: what if none of that was necessary? Not a smaller bank, not a cheaper bank, but a wallet that works more like handing someone cash than like filling out a form. You open it with a phone number. You send money and it just arrives. Nobody skims a percentage off a transfer between two people just because it passed through a screen instead of a hand.

That question shaped everything after it. If verification isn't required to receive cash from a friend, why should it be required to receive it digitally? If a taxi driver doesn't charge a fee to hand you change, why should moving money between two wallets cost anything? We kept asking what a bank does that actually needs doing, and building only that. Everything else, the branches, the queues, the forms that assume a life that not everyone lives, we just left out.

That's also why the business side is so plain. We don't make money from people holding a balance, and we don't make money from people sending it to each other. We make money the way a cash economy already understands: a small, clearly stated cut when a merchant gets paid, and a flat fee when cash physically leaves the system. No surprise deductions, no fine print explaining why your balance is R14 lower than you expected.

We're not trying to replace banks for everyone. We're building for the people banks were never really built for, and for anyone else who'd rather their money just moved, without a toll booth in the way.

What that means in practice

01

Everyone's welcome

Start with just a phone number. Full identity verification is optional, it only raises your limits, it never gates basic use.

02

Free between wallets

Sending money to another Bamba Wallet user costs nothing, ever. No percentage skimmed off, no minimum fee.

03

Honest about money

We charge merchants 1.5% + R0.50 per payment they receive, and a small flat fee on cash withdrawals. That's the entire business model. See the exact numbers on Fees & Limits.
